Wishing Tree Gardens

Compost

Vermiculture is currently the focus of composting at Wishing Tree Gardens.  Wishing Tree Gardens was fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Ann Arbor Community Foundation to expand our vermiculture program.  We now have over 200 pounds of worms.  We also used the grant to build an insulated outdoor home for the worms.

Wishing Tree Gardens will also use the grant money to begin black soldier fly composting.  This is a quick and efficient way of composting that can do many types of waste, including meat.  Another added bonus, is that the larvae can be fed to the koi in our aquaponics system.  We will keep you updated on how it goes!

Wishing Tree Gardens collects compost from area businesses and homes to supply material for these composting projects.  It has been a great way to be involved with the local community and provide a service.  We all win in this scenario and keep hundreds of pounds of organic waste a week from going into landfills.

Another exciting project at Wishing Tree Gardens is biochar technology. This systems burns organic matter at intense heat, creating a charcoal by-product that is superior to many other soil enhancement, and the process produces almost no carbon emissions whatsoever.
